There are over
300 species
of
Hummingbird. In the Hebrew alphabet the letter
“shin” is given the value of
300. This has associations
with fire and
relationships, the
past and the
future.
Hummingbirds move their wings in a figure
8, the symbol
for infinity, the links to the
past, future and
cause
and effect.
Hummingbirds
have long bills and tongues which enable
them to extract nectar from
flowers. Many flowers
depend
on pollination by hummingbirds. This reminds us of
cause
and effect, teaching us to
extract our own nectar.

“Hummingbirds
have knowledge of how to use flowers for
healing. This includes their fragrance,
their color, and herbal qualities as well.
They can teach you how to draw the life
essence from them and create your own
medicines.”

Flower remedies such as
Bach flower elixirs
are hugely beneficial, for
healing and
winning Hearts of Love.
The
hummingbird is one of the most
skillful flyers. It can
hover, fly backwards, forwards, sideways. It cannot
walk, it flies everywhere. This reminds us that when we
truly enjoy what we are doing, we become
light as a
feather, absorbing all the
richness that
Life has to
offer.

Hummingbirds can reach high speeds at take-off and can
also stop immediately from high speeds. They are
not
afraid of any predator and have been known to
chase off
eagles.
No
other bird can fly backwards. This
fantastic ability
symbolizes the skill to explore the past and
draw
nectars of learning and experience. These
rhythms can
help you find sweetness in all situations.
Its
swiftness is a reminder to
grab joy when you can.

“Because of
its iridescent colours, the hummingbird has
been named for jewels and glittering stones
– i.e. the ruby-throated hummingbird. It has
also come to be associated with the Faerie
Realm. One species has been called the
wood-nymph hummingbird and another, the
purple-crowned fairy.”

The hummingbird is also
associated with the rainbow of
promise following the
rain. To the
Pueblo Indians, the
hummingbird’s
rainbow
colouring, its great strength in flying, its hovering
around flowers, has associated it with various
sacred
ritual practices. Prayer sticks and ceremonies are used
to bring rain and help with
endurance.
Hummingbirds are big eaters. Most of their food is
comprised of nectars (sugars) of
flowers and
tiny
insects. They may eat 50-60 meals a day and must digest
food quickly because of their size and high degree of
activity. Those with hummingbird
totems should watch
their sugar levels.

Are you
getting too much or too little?
Are you hypoglycaemic or
hyperglycaemic?
Are you not getting enough sweetness in
your life?
Are you not savouring the sweet things in
life?
Hummingbirds are very
playful, even when
bathing, they
play in the water. They also
fight with each other,
however these are mock exercises for fun.
Hummingbirds are
fiercely independent, except when
mating, they like to be alone and
free. During
mating
the male will do anything to get the attention of the
female. If the female wants to mate she returns the
attention, otherwise she flies off.

“Mother
hummingbirds are hard workers. This is
necessary, for they receive no help from
their mate. She will usually lay two eggs,
again very symbolic. Two is the number of
the inner self, the feminine to which we
must give birth and expression to find our
own joy.”

Hummingbirds are
Master
architects. They build homes with
great care and
design
which are intricate and
unique. If
hummingbird has taken
residence, you may wish to redecorate and
create joy in
home.
Hummingbirds can also
hibernate overnight. Their
body
temperature will lower, its feathers will ruffle as
insulation, and they assume a
state of torpidity. This
is done to prevent exhausting their energy supplies. For
those with hummingbird totems, it is important to get
regular deep sleep and
rest. Do not burn yourself out
!

The
ruby-throated hummingbird is a
wonder of migration.
Every winter it makes an amazing journey. For several
days it will eat, storing up food and
energy. Then it
will fly for days to warmer climates. Some have been
known to make a journey of over 2500 miles from
Alaska
to
Central America. Because of this
miraculous journey,
the hummingbird is a symbol
for
accomplishing that which
seems impossible !

The
hummingbird will teach you how to find the
miracle of
joyful living within your own
precious and
sacred sphere
of Life.
Thank
You to the incredible
Ted Andrews for these
sacred
teachings.
